If you try to imagine the most peaceful place in the United States, your mind will probably wander to the pristine beaches of Hawaii or the remote cabins of Alaska. But let’s be honest, you would never think of a small town in Pennsylvania.

And although nature provides the greatest tranquility in the world, far from the madding crowd (Beatus Illeand all that), there is a small community in Pennsylvania called Lancaster that has just been listed as one of the most peaceful cities in the country. You can visit Miami or New York City if you’re in the mood for partying and excitement, but if you want peace and quiet, you may have to catch a plane to Pennsylvania.

This little urban gem has been named the most serene corner of the state according to the prestigious travel website The Travel. They’ve realized that TripAdvisor travelers can’t stop raving about Lancaster: they describe it as a “peaceful getaway” and a refuge from the daily frenzy they’re used to in their more tumultuous cities. But what makes Lancaster such a special oasis?

Lancaster, a peaceful place in Pennsylvania

Lancaster being the most peaceful place in the United States goes beyond just having a low crime rate; it also enjoys a higher average quality of life than other cities. Here, time seems to pass more slowly, and the pace of life is more relaxed. Its old town has maintained its historic tranquility in its streets, which still have their old buildings and a historic center that is entirely walkable. Unlike large cities, you can stroll peacefully through Lancaster without feeling overwhelmed.

This city is a time capsule. It was founded in 1729, making it one of the oldest inland cities in our country. Its architecture is a testament to its long history, preserved with great restraint. It has close ties to the Amish community, as it is the capital of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. This region is home to the largest and longest-standing Amish community on the planet.

This way of life permeates the palpable atmosphere of tranquility, while attracting tourists who come to see with their own eyes this lifestyle that rejects modern technology.

What to do in Lancaster, Pennsylvania

If you have the opportunity to visit Lancaster and its surroundings, there are many things to see. The first is The Amish Farm and House, where you can ride in a buggy and take a guided tour that shows you part of their daily life. (Remember not take photographs of Amish people, out of respect for their religion.)

Back in the city, you can go to the central market. This farmers’ market has been operating continuously since 1730, making it the longest-running farmers’ market in the United States. If you want to try authentic Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine, this is the place to go.

After filling your stomach, you can visit the Fulton Theater, a local treasure. It is a historic theater that always has a show or two on the bill. Finally, presidential history buffs should visit Wheatland, the beautiful former residence of President James Buchanan.

Lancaster Festivals

Don’t confuse peace with boredom. Despite its slow pace, Lancaster has a fairly active cultural life. It often hosts artistic events such as First Friday.

Every month, art galleries and studios open their doors late into the evening. It’s a day filled with live music, a festive atmosphere, and it’s completely free for attendees. During the warmer months, there are also Music Fridays from May to September. At these celebrations, you can listen to free live local music.

If you like food, Celebrate Lancaster is an annual event full of food trucks and beer gardens. It often coincides with Independence Day, so if you want to try it, visit Lancaster around this time. What do you think? Fancy a change of destination for your next vacation?
