Traffic is one of the main problems in large cities, and Miami is no exception. It is for this reason that a water taxi service has just been inaugurated in the Sunshine State. Specifically, the city of Miami Beach has officially launched a free, permanent water taxi service that will connect it to downtown Miami to alleviate traffic congestion on its access roads. According to local media, this public transportation service also allows bicycles or skateboards, depending on available space.
“This new service offers a scenic, sustainable, and convenient alternative to driving across Biscayne Bay”
All the information is available on the official website, which explains how to board the water taxi, its stops, schedules, etc. The company announced it as follows: “Miami Beach is launching a free commuter water taxi service connecting Miami Beach and Downtown Miami starting January 20, 2026.” The website explains all the details: “This new service offers a scenic, sustainable, and convenient alternative to driving across Biscayne Bay. Each vessel is approximately 40 feet long and designed to comfortably carry up to 55 passengers, making your commute not only efficient but enjoyable.” This new service allows you to cross Biscayne Bay in 20 minutes, without depending on bridge opening times.
In Miami Beach, boarding takes place at Maurice Gibb Memorial Park, located at the intersection of 18th Street and Purdy Avenue
As for the route, it operates between two designated points on either side of the bay: In Miami Beach, boarding takes place at Maurice Gibb Memorial Park, located at the intersection of 18th Street and Purdy Avenue. And on the Miami side, the designated pier is Sea Isle Marina, at 1635 North Bayshore Drive. “Enjoy seamless connections and stress-free parking, with easy access to multiple transportation options on both sides of the bay: hop on the South Beach Trolley or Freebee in Miami Beach, or transfer at the OMNI station in Miami,” they describe on the official website.
Regarding the schedule, the system operates from Monday to Friday and does not provide service on weekends. It is important for users to take this information into account, as, according to the source, this will be the case at least during the initial phase. The taxi will be available between 7:00 AM and 4:30 PM, with departures every 60 minutes. From 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM, the frequency is reduced to 30-minute intervals. “This exclusive route offers a unique experience, without competition from other water taxi services,” explains the Water Taxi website. It is certainly an alternative for many users who regularly travel this route.
In the Miami Beach area, the pier connects to the free municipal trolley system
Residents are also informed that bicycles and scooters can be brought on board the water taxi “at the captain’s discretion, provided there is sufficient space,” as explained by the organizers, who urge users to consult the Miami Beach Safe Micromobility Guide. They also note that there is a CitiBike station at the northwest corner of Purdy Avenue and 18th Street. Additionally, in the Miami Beach area, the pier connects to the free municipal trolley system, the Freebee on-demand service in parts of Mid Beach and North Beach, and Miami-Dade County bus lines.
In addition, Miami Beach residents can enjoy special CitiBike benefits. It’s important to note that until now, this water taxi service was only available temporarily during Miami Art Week, which takes place every December, to accommodate the large influx of people who come to Miami Beach to see the exhibitions and galleries. Based on the experience during Art Week, the need for a more permanent service became clear. On the Miami side, the arrival point is near the OMNI station, which has connections to regional buses and the Metromover, allowing for continued urban travel without needing a private vehicle. In any case, it’s an alternative for residents and visitors, and according to official sources, the route could be extended depending on its performance during this period.
