It's official—Costco confirms the complete closure of its stores in the United States on Christmas Day and notifies its customers

Costco is also taking a break. During the Christmas season, the supermarket giant will close its doors on the designated dates, as announced on its website. The store will be closed for 24 hours on December 25th and has reduced its hours on many other national holidays throughout 2026. The decision is in response to a traditional holiday on the American calendar, which will be observed simultaneously across the country. Therefore, the company recommends doing your shopping early and not waiting until the last minute.

Costco isn’t closed many days a year, but the dates are clear: New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. These are the days the supermarket giant will be closed throughout the year. Costco is one of those stores that always seems to be open, so checking the hours in advance is best to avoid any surprises.

Special Christmas Hours: What Changes on December 24 and 25

Like many other businesses that serve the public, Costco will be closed on national holidays. In Costco’s case, without exception, all locations of the supermarket giant will be closed on December 25th, resuming normal operations on Friday, December 26th, with regular hours. Banks, post offices, and the stock exchange are also closed on Christmas Day. And as is the case every year at retailers like Costco, Christmas Eve will have reduced hours, so it’s advisable not to leave your shopping until the last minute.

On December 24, as mentioned above, Costco will have different hours. General members can shop from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., while executive members can enter the store an hour earlier. Unlike other holidays, when stores remain open, most major supermarkets are closed on Christmas Day. As for restaurants and food options, some remain open, but others close. In addition to Costco, other chains that will be closed on December 25 include Walmart and Target, although they will offer options such as online shopping. In other words, there’s no limit if what the consumer really wants is to shop.

Other Retailers Adjusting Their Holiday Schedules

Therefore, other stores will also operate with different hours, so it’s advisable to check these changes before heading out to shop. Aldi will operate with limited hours; Bj’s will also have limited hours, as will Publix and The Fresh Market. Similarly, Sam’s Club and Sprouts will adjust their hours during peak shopping periods in December.

Thus, some major supermarket chains will close their doors on Christmas Day, a day when, traditionally, people gather with family, friends, and loved ones. It is a day when, regardless of religion, almost all citizens with non-essential jobs observe a day of rest. The same will apply on New Year’s Eve. On December 31st, some stores will adjust their opening hours so that most people can get home in time to celebrate the end of the year with their loved ones. This will allow all stores to remain closed on January 1st, as on December 25th.
