The colder months are coming to the United States, and with them, higher electricity bills. With temperatures hovering around freezing, having a warm home is essential. With this in mind, there are programs offering rebates of nearly $1,000 on energy bills that U.S. citizens can take advantage of. Specifically, households in New Jersey can receive automatic credits and enroll in energy-saving programs. This is thanks to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), which offers various programs to reduce home energy costs.

New Jersey residents will automatically receive $100, divided into two payments, during the first months of fall

Specifically, there are three energy programs that residents of New Jersey and New York can take advantage of. Whether you rent or own your home, NJBPU offers various programs to reduce your consumption and make your energy bills more manageable. For New Jersey residents, there is an automatic program that provides two separate payments as direct relief on their energy bill. New Jersey residents will automatically receive $100, divided into two payments, during the first months of fall.

The state also offers assistance to residents through its Low Income Household Energy Assistance Program, for which applications are open until June 30th of next year

More than $430 million in direct utility bill assistance is currently being distributed to New Jersey households. These funds help residents reduce their energy costs and save money. The state also offers assistance to residents through its Low Income Household Energy Assistance Program, for which applications are open from October 1st to June 30th of next year, on a first-come, first-served basis.

New Yorkers have the opportunity to obtain discounts of up to $496 on their utility bills through the Energy Affordability Program

The second way to access this assistance will offer a discount of between $435 and $496, while the first guarantees a $435 discount for all who qualify, as explained above. New Yorkers have the opportunity to obtain discounts of up to $496 on their utility bills through the Energy Affordability Program and its various subprograms. With four payment tiers based on income level, the highest tier of the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will allow customers to pay their bills in full. It is important to be well-informed about the available assistance and also about each family’s individual situation, as circumstances are constantly changing.

Options: Payment for Gas and Electricity Assistance (PAGE), which offers temporary help for moderate-income families with overdue utility bills

Therefore, among the utility bill assistance programs offered by the Universal Service Fund (USF) are: assistance to reduce monthly electricity and gas bills for eligible households; the Low Income Household Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which provides help with heating bills and may cover emergency heating repairs or replacements; Payment for Gas and Electricity Assistance (PAGE), which offers temporary help for moderate-income families with overdue utility bills; the Lifeline Utility Assistance program, which provides an annual energy benefit to seniors and people with disabilities; and the Winter Termination program, which protects eligible households from service disconnections during the winter season. The latter is available from November 15 to March 15.

These credits automatically appear on the bills of eligible customers through their investor-owned utility provider

It’s important to note that most of these benefits don’t require application. These credits automatically appear on the bills of eligible customers through their investor-owned utility provider. In addition to these payments, households with incomes low enough to qualify will receive seven $25 credits per month from August 2025 to February 2026. If you have any questions, it’s recommended that you contact an official state information center.
